Late drama in F3 derby draw
August 15, 2008
NEWCASTLE Jets striker Joel Griffiths salvaged three points for his team, after they looked set to lose the A-League season opener against local rivals Central Coast Mariners.
Newcastle had the best of the possession and attacking forays but the back of the net proved elusive for the reigning premiers in a scrappy but entertaining encounter.
The game looked to be heading for a scoreless draw until Mariners striker Matt Simon popped up to score a header in the 87th minute.
Then, with just four minutes left, the referee blew for a penalty after a clumsy Brad Porter challenge on Tarek Elrich and captain Griffiths made no mistake from the spot to save his team's blushes.
