Default Safin sends Djokovic crashing

June 26, 2008

MERCURIAL Russian Marat Safin rolled back the years in sensational style when he sent No.3 seed Novak Djokovic crashing out of Wimbledon.

Safin, a former world No.1 and Australian and US Open champion, triumphed 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 in the second round to record one of the best wins of his colourful, rollercoaster career.

The Russian, who has been in freefall since his last title in Australia in 2005 and has seen his ranking slump to 75, will now face Italian Andreas Seppi, the No.29 seed, for a place in the last 16.

It was a shattering defeat for 21-year-old Djokovic, the reigning Australian Open champion, who was a semi-finalist in 2007 and who was being widely tipped as a potential winner should Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal falter.

"This win came at the right time for me. I've been lacking confidence but to beat Djokovic on centre court is a great win,'' said Safin who has endured a miserable 2008, only twice winning back-to-back matches before Wimbledon.

"I haven't had a win like this for a long time. I had to play really well and concentrate and be with him game by game and just go for it.

"But he was under pressure. He's fighting for the No.1 spot by the end of the year while nothing was expected of me.

"I didn't look at the draw after Djokovic but the way I'm playing I think I can go far.''

Safin had defeated Djokovic, for the loss of just three games, in the first round of the Australian Open in 2005, and the Serbian admitted that he had paid the Russian too much respect.

"It was a very bad day for me. I didn't do anything I was supposed to do. I made too many mistakes and had no momentum,'' said the 21-year-old, who was runner-up to Nadal at Queen's two weeks ago.

"I didn't expect to lose in straight sets. But he's a tough opponent especially on centre court. He's a big talent but unpredictable.

"He's a great player. He was one of my idols when I was a junior. I have a lot of respect for him and maybe that played a role today.''

Safin broke to lead 3-2 in the first set when Djokovic served up a fourth double fault but handed the advantage immediately back to the Serbian.

In recent years, that would usually have signalled a collapse but buoyed by being back on centre court and back in the big time, Safin broke again in the seventh game to lead 4-3.

His pinpoint first service, which had Djokovic constantly in trouble, carried him to the first set.

Djokovic, with his game stuttering in the difficult windy conditions, fought off break points in the third game before Safin ran away with the tiebreaker when the world No.3 patted back an unreturnable serve.

The 28-year-old Russian was in complete control and was ahead 3-0 in the third set after breaking Djokovic in the second game.

Djokovic saved three match points in the eighth game but then served up a lazy ninth double fault to hand Safin a famous victory after just two hours on court.

Default A-Rod a loser, Nadal advances

June 27, 2008

SERBIA'S Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic beat Andy Roddick 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 7-6 (7-4)to end the No.6 seed's involvement in Wimbledon at the second round.

Roddick, the runner-up in 2004 and 2005 to Roger Federer, slumped to his worst defeat in nine visits to the tournament.

But it was better news for No.2 seed Rafael Nadal, bidding to become only the third man to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season, who saw off 19-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis 5-7 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.

Tipsarevic, who now faces Russia's Dmitry Tursunov for a place in the last 16, also rode to the rescue of Serbian men's tennis a day after No.3 seed Novak Djokovic was knocked out by Marat Safin.

Roddick only returned to the tour at Queen's last week after a shoulder injury cut short his clay-court season and his lack of sharpness told in this gruelling three-hour match where he failed to convert any of his eight break points.

Despite firing down 27 aces, he was unable to convert three set points which would have taken the second roud tie into a decider.

"He's capable of playing well, especially when you give him opportunity after opportunity and kind of let him off the hook. I mean, that's not shocking,'' said Roddick.

"Angry and disappointed in myself? Absolutely.''

Tipsarevic, who wears tinted glasses on court, celebrated victory by collapsing to the turf as he avenged his defeat to the American in the first round here two years ago.

Nadal will tackle experienced German Nicolas Kiefer for a place in the last 16.

"I knew beforehand that it would be a very difficult match. He's a tough player who will be at the top very soon,'' said Nadal, who has been runner-up to Federer in the last two years.

"I served only so-so at the start but it got better as the match went on and I feel that I improved.''

Local hope, the No.12 seed Andy Murray, kept British hopes alive by brushing aside Belgium's Xavier Malisse 6-4 6-2 6-2 and now faces Germany's Tommy Haas, who put out No.23 seed Tommy Robredo 6-4 6-4 6-3.

But America's James Blake, the No.9 seed, was knocked out by Rainer Schuettler, with the 32-year-old German winning 6-3 6-7 (8/10) 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Default Ferrer foiled, Safin show goes on

June 28, 2008

MARIO Ancic, the last man to beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon, has upset No.5 seed David Ferrer in the third round at Wimbledon.

Ancic, a qualifier at Wimbledon in 2002 when he beat Federer in the first round, ended Spaniard Ferrer's run 6-4 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) in 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Ancic reached the semi-finals in 2004 and was ousted in the quarter-finals by Federer in 2006, his previous trip to the All England Club.

Ferrer followed No.3 Novak Djokovic and No.4 Nikolay Davydenko as casualties of the first five days, leaving just four of the men's top 10 seeds in the tournament before the end of the first week.

Ancic goes on to face another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, in the fourth round.

Also progressing was Marat Safin, the former world No.1, who followed up his win over Djokovic with a 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 victory over Italian Andreas Seppi, the No.29 seed.

The Russian, whose ranking has slumped to 75, faces Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in the last 16.

Default Hewitt bows to the real daddy

July 01, 2008

WORLD No.1 and five-time defending champion Roger Federer ended Lleyton Hewitt's Wimbledon campaign with a straight-sets fourth-round win over the Aussie father-to-be.

Federer increased his winning streak on grass to 63 with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 6-4 win over the 20th-seeded Hewitt in one hour and 49 minutes.

Waiting for Federer in the quarter-finals is unseeded Croation Mario Ancic, who came back from two sets down to beat No.22 seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 13-11.

Hewitt paid tribute to Federer's unrivalled ability to absorb pressure after the top seed took time to settle.

"The first set could have gone either way. I had chances in the tiebreak,'' said Hewitt.

"But he served extremely well. Any quarter chances I got I didn't have for long. He hit the lines very well today and that's why he's the best player in the world, especially on this surface.''

The victory also secured the top ranking for at least another week for Federer, regardless of how he fares the rest of the tournament.

Federer, who is seeking his sixth consecutive title at the All England Club, now has a 14-7 win-loss record - including 12 straight victories - against Hewitt, the last man to win Wimbledon before the Swiss began his dominance of the event.

After clinching the first-set tiebreak on his fourth set point with an ace, Federer stepped up.

He won the fourth game to love for a 4-0 lead in the second set, which he closed out comfortably.

In the third set, Hewitt failed to take some early chances against Federer, who sealed victory on his second of three match points when Hewitt netted a return.

It was Federer's serving and ability to win the big points which ultimately proved the difference.

The world No.1 converted his only three break-point opportunities of the match - two in the second set and one in the third - while Hewitt was unable to capitalise on any of his eight break-point chances on Federer's serve.

"He hit the target every time,'' Hewitt said of Federer's serve.

"I had break-point chances there late in the second set and early in the third set. I didn't do too much wrong with them.

"When he's serving like that, it's not easy on this surface purely because his serve sets up the point for him to play in his comfort zone.

"It's very hard to take him out of that zone.''

Federer thundered down 21 aces to Hewitt's eight to set up a quarter-final with Ancic, the last man to beat the Swiss dominator at Wimbledon - some six years ago.

The two players had entered a packed centre court to a standing ovation and a small but vocal band of Australian supporters were fully behind Hewitt.

They sang several tailor-made chants, squealing each time Federer hit the ball in the warm-up and grunting heartily when their compatriot hit it back.

With Hewitt trailing 3-4 in the opening set - and just hours after the news broke that he and wife Bec are expecting their second baby, in January - the Australian fans launched into the Home And Away theme song in a bid to lift their compatriot.

But it was to no avail.

"I served considerably well when I had to,'' Federer said.

"But I could see Lleyton was struggling. The tiebreaker was key as that put me on the way and I saved break points when I had to.''

Hewitt must now decide whether to undergo surgery for a hip injury which has troubled him since March or push through the pain barrier and continue with his plans to contest the Beijing Olympics and US Open in August.

Default Federer plots perfect 10

July 03, 2008

ROGER Federer could make history by becoming the first man to win six successive Wimbledon titles - but he won't be satisfied until he's added at least five more to his name.

The world No.1 is unbeaten on grass for six years after racking up his 64th win in a row on the surface by cruising past Mario Ancic to set up a mouthwatering semi-final with Marat Safin.

"I'll have a chance to win this tournament for the next five or 10 years,'' insisted the 26-year-old Federer.

"Doesn't matter how I play from here. I think my game's made for grass. There will always be tough opponents, dangerous opponents.

"But I always found a way to win. Of course, my dream is to not only win this year, but for many more years to come. If it doesn't happen, I'll try to win the next one again. This is what it's all about for me at this stage.''

If he achieves his goal, it will comfortably make him the most successful grand slam winner of all time, surpassing close friend Pete Sampras's record of 14.

At the moment, his running tally stands at 12.

However, he first must get past Safin, a former world No.1 and US Open and Australian Open champion who's been the revelation of Wimbledon by defying his world ranking of 75 to reach his first All England Club semi-final.

Saturday's match (EST) will be the volatile Russian's first grand slam last-four appearance since 2005, the year he beat Federer on his way to lifting the Australian Open, his last trophy performance on the tour.

Federer, who holds an 8-2 career winning record over Safin including a straight-sets, fourth-round win here in 2007, has nothing but respect for his opponent.

That admiration can only have been enhanced by seeing Safin destroy world number three Novak Djokovic in the second round.

For the Swiss, Safin's current lowly ranking is irrelevant.

"I have never looked at Marat like No.75 in the world. That's ridiculous. He knows that himself. He's finally showing again what he can do,'' said Federer.

"It's quite surprising he does it here at Wimbledon, because he used to dislike playing on this surface.

"It should be interesting. Last year I wasn't happy to see Safin in my draw. I'm never happy. He probably knows that.''

Default Nadal the new king of Wimbledon

July 07, 2008

RAFAEL Nadal beat defending champion Roger Federer in five sets to win an epic Wimbledon men's singles final that was interrupted by rain and lasted for almost five hours.

The Spaniard won 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (8-10) 9-7 to add a first title at the All England club to his four French Open victories.

Nadal's victory, in what was the longest final in the tournament's history, ended Federer's 65-match unbeaten run on grass and denied the Swiss the chance to become the first man since the 19th century to win six Wimbledon titles in a row.

For Nadal, it was a case of third time lucky as he turned the tables on his great rival after losing out to him in the 2006 and 2007 finals.

The 22-year-old, who demolished Federer in last month's French Open final, becomes the third man to win titles at Roland Garros and the All England club in the same year in the Open era, emulating the achievements of Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg.

He was the first Spaniard to win a Wimbledon title since Manolo Santana in 1966.

"It's impossible to explain what I felt when I won. I'm just very happy to win this title. I never thought I could win but to do so is a dream,'' said Nadal.

"I had match points but Roger is very tough. I want to congratulate Roger because he is great for tennis, win or lose.

"He's still the number one, he's still the best. He is a five-time champion and I have just the one.''

Federer conceded he had been beaten by the better man on the day.

"I tried everything,'' he said.

"Rafa is a deserving champion - he just played fantastic. It is a pity I did not win but I will be back next year.''

Nadal got his nose in front when he broke Federer's service in the third game of the opening set and went on to clinch it 6-4.

He came from a break down to claim the second by the same scoreline.

Federer kept the defence of his title alive by clinching the third set in a tiebreak after a rain break of more than an hour at the end of the ninth game.

He then saved two match points before clinching the fourth-set tiebreak to force the match into the decisive fifth.

But Nadal was not to be denied and finally claimed victory in the 16th game of the fifth set after four hours and 48 minutes on court in a game which finished at 9.15pm local time.
