Goodonya Coops, a loyal dog man. It's been a long time since I have been to Richmond but I am overdue for a another visit to Wenty. Did you know that Richmond was a straight track up to the second half of the 1960s. Ace racecaller, Ian Craig, learnt much of his trade there on Saturday afternoons. I don't know whether it is still the case but I have heard Ian say (long ago) that he "likes the dishlickers". He owned one or more dogs in partnership with then prominent personality, Gary Wilson, now in Perth, I think? I think one of their dogs might have been Stylamatic. At the time of Ian's comment ,my recollection is that he was having an on-camera discussion with a smug, smart arse, Max Presnell on Channel 7's Sunday sports programme. Terry Kennedy's dad, Frank was also a regular on the panel. He and the smug Max P had many a verbal stoush. Frank's willingness to get involved, if absolutely necessary, in a stoush was not confined to the verbal type. Frank was the racecaller at Richmond when it went "circle". One night he had to resort to challenging the ringleader and prime antagonist to quell a potential riot by a very worked-up group of punters who were extremely unhappy with the performance of favourite, Diamond Lane in the last at Richmond. Frank's action resolved the problem. Sorry, Vadim, to digress on to the dogs on what is your racing related thread.

Mate, do I know Richmond Sraight track.
I can remember all those people you have mentioned. Did you ever watch The two unbeaten straight dogs back in the late 60's THE SHOE and IRISH SENTINAL.
I was there when they both raced in the same race and THE SHOE beat IRISH SENTINAL by a head. THE SHOE went to Harold Park the following week and broke the track record over the 500yds 26.2. Two races later SWANKY BEAU equalled it. The folloing week THE SHOE broke it again 26.0.
Sorry Vad, could help myself.

Sorry Vad, but yes Coops I do remember both The Shoe and Irish Sentinel well, however, I must admit to not recalling the time that they both met in the same race at Richmond. When I think of speed I would, based on my incomplete knowledge, have not put Irish Sentinel in the same class as The Shoe but I am sure he was a top dog up the Richmond 400 yards. The Shoe at one time held 5 track records and of course his 26.0 at HP, well what can you say. The record had been 26.4 for so long, then I think Black Tass went 26.3. The records went down in increments of 0.1 in those days. I also remember Swanky Beau well. I also think ???? there was at least one great race at Richmond straight involving Zoom Top and Sammie Sparrow and others. I liked the straight, it had a real old time carninval atmosphere about it. One could think of a time at say Wyong (because I know this is true) when the the connections with dogs would pour off the train from Sydney, leads in hand, bedding for the racing kennels under arm and high hopes in their hearts. Again sorry Vad, I think Coops and I have ambushed your thread but it is definitely me who is to blame, Coops is a good guy, I am bad.

Goodonya Vadim, that is a very magnaminous of you and I am NOT being facetious. It would not have been inappropriate for you to be thinking and reacting, "I wish you guys would %#&^ off". If I was anywhere near Sandown or even even Eagle Farm or WWWWoolwhateveritis, I would make a point of dropping in to say hello to you or one of your mates, and buy you or whoever a beer. I will do so one day. In fact, I have never been to either of those tracks. Gotta go now to the daughter's for dinner so better get on my bike and I mean bike, the wife and I are riding (about 8 kms away). Might be interesting riding home as the weather is looking a bit suspicious, could be a heavy track.
