Thanks Dougie for these Hobart 1000 heats. Looks interesting I think it corresponds with the Ballarat Cup Final night. I will definitely be at the club and not only because my daughter is having friends over for a BBQ. It will be interesting to see how Fallen Zorro and Chinatown Lad go in their respective heats and even their litter brother Arctic Silver who has not started since mid-June.
Big Moose is another interesting runner, as well as Fergalicious and is First Innings a Ricky Ponting greyhound? Also Birthday Boy is a very capable visitor. It is undoubtedly just a case of my lack of knowledge of the various dogs and the race conditions but I must admit to being surprised that Teaman Titch (almost $50,000 prizemoney) can only get a reserve spot. Furthermore, I am confused as to why Teaman Titch appears to be drawn as a reserve in only one heat whereas others are drawn as a reserve in more than one heat. I am sure there is a very good reason. Does anyone know the reasoning behind these matters?

For anyone who is interested I have with regard to the drawing of Teaman Titch as a reserve only in the Hobart Thousand heats, investigated this matter. I have advice from an authoritative source that the drawing of Teaman Titch and for example, also Hastings Bale, only as reserves, is due to the necessity to follow a stringent grading and order of choice policy, with no flexibility to meet the special needs of what is probably Tasmania's major event. Prior to this year the grader did have some discretion but this has been taken away by the Greyhound Racing Tasmania Council (GRTC). I know, we all know, that there is no perfect solution to grading matters but one thing I know for sure, is that there is a better option than this for big races. The authoritative advice is that if Teaman Titch and Hastings Bale had run 3rd at their respective last starts, they would both have received straight draws. Would a 3rd at Appin or Healesville have made all the difference in getting a straight draw? Poor old Teaman Titch ran unplaced in the Melbourne Cup Final and then unplaced in a heat of the Brisbane Cup. "He's only won $50,000 or so". I know that the Hobart Club is very embarrassed and frustrated by not being able to have the very best dogs guaranteed of a run in the Hobart Thousand Heats. However, I will watch Sky at the club on Weds night and enjoy all of the races very much. This race has a great tradition, a race which I think also has a bit of aura, an ayr of mystique about it. That is, a race run in a beautiful location (I love Tassie), geographically isolated but with mainland "raiders" invading the southern isle to "steal the gold". Maybe even "exotic" in the context of greyhound racing is applicabe. Chicka Morris back in the 1960s was a frequent visitor, an incredible traveller with dogs. "Heaven only knows" how many winners he trained all around Australia. The presence of him and his dogs as well as other visitors, added colour to this great race. Let's hope that public servant mentality doesn't kill it and greyhound racing in general.

Damn it, I thought I saw somewhere that the Hobart Thousand Heats were tonight 10 Dec but of course it is tomorrow night 11 Dec. I was looking forward to a big night combined with the Ballarat Cup Final. I hope the track is in good order for the Final to make the time very interesting (I have no idea of what the weather is like down there today). My feeling is that Whisky Assassin's record is ripe for the picking but then I have been thinking this about the respective, Sandown and Meadows 500 records for some time now and they are still there. Good luck to anyone who has a bet. I will just watch.

Thanks Dougie. Although they were generally very short, you did pick 4 of the 8 heat winners and you did make a small profit. Well done. I calculate it to be 8.75% on total outlay. If you could do that over a whole year, every year, it would be very nice. I am sure professional punters work on a smaller percentage than that but to make a decent living you would have to turnover $10,000 a week (tax free I hope). I won't tell the "tax man".
