QUEEN TO GO FOR SHOOTOUT QUEEN Lauryn has pulled up magnificently from her Group 1 Sapphire Crown victory at Sandown last Thursday night and will be kept in work. She is to be nominated for the Group 3 Sandown Shootout next Thursday. Fleur Brett, wife of trainer Tony, said today discussions about Queen Lauryn's future depended on if she makes milk during her three-month season. But she said the bitch had shown no indications of that happening and Queen Lauryn would press on in her current campaign. The daughter of Token Prince-Cheeky Sprite took her record to 17 wins from 25 starts and $127,000 in stakes with her all-the-way Sapphire Crown victory. Brett had won the same race with his Hall of Famer Bogie Leigh. Last week could not have been better for the Brett household. On Tuesday Fleur and Tony had their first daughter, Zoe Grace, and on Thursday it was Fleur's 34th birthday. That night Queen Lauryn won the Sapphire Crown. Queen Lauryn remained in Melbourne after the Sapphire Crown with trainer Ron Hood and Tony had spoken to him on Friday. "Ron said she pulled up magnificently," said Fleur. |

What a very good dog is that Mantra Lad, outstanding in both the 500s and the 700s and of course the 600s when the opportunity arises. Hopefully the trainer continues to be able to manage the cramping problem that has trouble him at times. The Queen was gallant but lost it when she wobbled around the home turn. Has she done this before at Sandown and/or other tracks. I have only seen her when racing at Albion Park. She went to the line strongly. I would love to see a Shootout type race over the 600 at The Meadows with Mantra Lad and the best 3 other 600 greyhounds that can be found. It would be very interesting. Does anyone have suggestions as to who the other 3 might be to make up a 600 Shootout field.

Morgan, my observation is that Mantra was clearly getting to her coming to the home turn but what really lost it for her was that she wobbled around the home turn (quite awkward). I was surprised that there was so little between them at the winning post. I would have thought that Mantra, getting up on the rails, would have won more comfortably. To be honest Mantra was the one I was most watching. I thought he had at least as good a chance as did the Queen but she was odds on and him was in the 'black' in more ways than one. In fact, come to think of it, she was in the 'red' in more ways than one. Graham Jose talking on Sydney 2KY radio yesterday morning sounded quietly confident about Mantra's chances. Good luck to him but I look forward to the Queen winning many more races. Made to Size ran well, not sure if he had been trialled at Sandown recently.
