Dashing Corsair Steams Into Association Cup Final

09/01/11 Queensland champion Dashing Corsair stole the show at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, running a slashing 42.07s to take out the second heat of the Group One Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup (720m). Heading into Saturday night’s qualifier with two Wentworth Park victories, the Dwyer Lennon-trained Queensland Greyhound Of The Year aspirant simply outpointed his rivals in a 6½ length demolition. The Anthony Azzopardi-trained Seek And Destroy was most courageous at his 720m debut running a gallant second, with outsider Dash Of Shiraz winding up in third. From Saturday night’s triumph Dashing Corsair looks to have a vice-like-grip on the final with a firm hand on next Saturday night’s $50,000 winner’s cheque. In the other run-off, Keith Pedrana’s Slick Lee saluted by the narrowest of margins, winning by a nose over Victorian veteran Beware who continued his terrific Wentworth Park form. Slick Lee’s victory was just reward for some extremely consistent form in recent months, with the win setting up a rematch with Dashing Corsair, following his unlucky third to the Queenslander in last month’s Newcastle Cup at Betchoice Gardens. With only two heats of the Group One feature, Hanify’s Belle, Cristalle and Fancy Jewel also made their way through to next Saturday night’s final. The box draw is: 1 Dashing Corsair, 2 Dash Of Shiraz, 3 Fancy Jewel, 4 Cristalle, 5 Hanify’s Belle, 6 Slick Lee, 7 Seek And Destroy, 8 Beware. Away from the heats it was an exciting night’s racing, with Jason Mackay’s Glen Abbey Man stealing time honours with a 29.68s trouncing of his rivals in the AAA Radiators Specialists Stake. The son of Bit Chili made it win number nine with Saturday night’s effort, with his budding career moving forward in leaps and bounds. Owen Langley’s pairing Shady’s Lesson and Redfern Fever chased the winner throughout, finishing second and third respectively. Training honours for the night went to Kembla Grange trainer Ruth King who led in a winning double with Jack’s Pocket in the opener and Double Decoy in race six. Jack’s Pocket was a most comprehensive victor, finding the lead on the first turn to win in a slashing 30.09s. Double Decoy saluted later in the program in 30.27s and was just as impressive, negotiating a run on the first turn to defeat King Emmanuel by four lengths. In the ninth event, Monster Jack opened up his Wentworth Park account for trainer Lorraine Roy, registering 30.33s in a strong all round display. The son of Collide has untapped ability and with that win now under his belt expect him to go on from here over the ensuing months. All roads lead to Wentworth Park next Saturday night for the final of the Group One Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup. Last edited by Dougie; 01-10-2011 at 11:53 AM. |

Mad Dash To Bypass Floods On The Cards For Corsair 14/01/11 There are some major concerns that raging Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup favourite, Dashing Corsair (pictured), could miss the Group One feature because of the devastating floods that are currently ravaging Queensland. His trainers Dwyer and Desley Lennon are based at Churchable, west of Brisbane, which have been severely affected by the freak weather onslaught, with several properties in the area having to be evacuated. The Lennons and owner Paddy Fitch are even contemplating getting a helicopter to fly the star chaser to Brisbane Airport so he can fly to Sydney for the big race where he is a pronounced favourite. Following his awesome heat victory last week, posting 42.07s, Dashing Corsair has been served up a $1.44 favourite for the $50,000-to-the-winner event, the shortest quote in a Group One for quite some time. With the rails draw to aid his cause, you would need to be rather brave to suggest the son of Malfoy won’t notch up his second Group One race on Saturday evening. The Keith Pedrana-trained Slick Lee looks to be Dashing Corsair’s biggest threat in the decider, although he will need to improve markedly on the clock, posting 42.68s last week. |

Seek And Destroy Wins Drama Charged Assoc Cup
Courtesy of thedogs.com.au
16/01/11 Anthony Azzopardi’s decision to step star chaser Seek And Destroy up to the 720 metres has paid immediate dividends, with a determined victory in Saturday night’s Group One Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup Final at Wentworth Park. In a comprehensive front-running display, the ex-Victorian trained galloper ran sections of 16.56s and 25.55s before posting 43 seconds neat to scoop the $50,000 winner’s cheque. By Surf Lorian out of Miss Hanify, Seek And Destroy, owned by Terry Allen, is a deserved Group One victor as he’s raced the highest echelon of chasers over the past 12 to 18 months. It was a marvellous training performance by Azzopardi to get his charge to taste Group One glory, with his heat run behind Dashing Corsair putting the writing on the wall for a strong performance in the final. The victory made it two Association Cups in three years for Azzopardi, who of course took out the 2009 race with his star bitch Lilley Criminal. The hype around the race all week centred around Queensland champion Dashing Corsair, and the lengths his connections had to go to just to be at Wentworth Park on Saturday night. Unfortunately for Dwyer and Desley Lennon, their raging hot favourite missed the kick from his inside draw, but chased tenaciously throughout to finish second in another honourable display. He lost no admirers with his gallant second and it looks as though a Group One win is just around the corner. Hanify’s Belle, a litter sister to Seek And Destroy, finished third 1½ lengths away for Majella Ferguson, continuing her run of good form. It’s very likely we’ll see both the winner and runner-up face off again soon, with both targeting the rich Galaxy at Cannington over the 715m. Away from the final it was an action packed night’s chasing with Owen Langley getting another double in town with Shady’s Lesson and Redfern Fever successful again. In what seems to be coming a regular occurrence, Shady’s Lesson posted 30.42s to win with Redfern Fever leading all-the-way in a nippy 30.15s. In the opening leg of the quadrella, Frank Hurst’s Ringo’s Colt stamped himself as a stayer with potential, reeling off a 7½ length victory in 42.81s. High Ball finished second with Miss Bossy Boots winding up in third. Windsor Bale kept his hot form going in the ninth event, crossing from box seven to win in 30.44s. The Bulli Gold Plate finalist has really taken to Wentworth Park with Saturday’s effort from box seven his best yet. The night was closed off with an impressive effort by Winsome Shiraz, trained by John and Minnie Finn. The regally bred daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Silver looks promising and is well worth keeping an eye on in the following weeks. |
