Default General Infomation Please

happy new yr to all
i have only just joined site i am interested in racing greyhounds only trouble is i am as green as grass when it comes to knowing anything re greyhounds
if i may ask a couple of question
for eg
i wish to purchase a pup around 6 mths of age
apart from price of dog or bitch
how much am i up for in rearing fees breaking in fees etc
and what is the going rate most trainers charge to train dog
i live in south east suburbs of melb
and i also realise two things one no guarantees dog will get to races or be any good secondly there is shonky breaking in trainers plus trainers out there
so any info would be much appreciated for this green horn

well if i was you firstly i would get a give away greyhound around 18 months to 2 years go to races and talk to the other trainers and owners.
one thing that i find is public trainers hate people that dont care about the dog and just want to palm it off to the trainer without having input .
rear it yourself break it in at a break in center about 400 dollars and train and race it yourself
people race greyhounds to keep the dog and themselves happy
not for money
if u get a greyhound its a 24 hour a day 7 day a week job and every greyhound can get to the track and win its the time effort and attention that you personaly put into it.

if ur not ready for 100 percent comitment than dont get a greyhound

hey mate, depends on what breed of dog you are after, anywhere from 1k to 5k for a pup, not sure what the prices are for rearing and breaking in in vic, rearing can be anywhere from 35-75 per week and breaking in is usually on average 100 a week, most trainers will do a 50/50 alot now are taking the first 100 and 50/50 after that, you will get a good idea by just talking to a few, good luck with everything, most people on here are pretty approachable and give good advice (when they want too lol) again good luck

cheers

yes i know this but if he wants to own one than he should still be committed to it and realise that greyhound racing is not about money we all do it for enjoyment and because the dog love to have a run wouldnt you agree

what we need is some fresh faces at the tracks getting involved in the sport not blood sucking people that just buy dogs and send them off to other trainers for a bit of cash but thats my opinion i just believe we need a bit of incentive and to train some younger people into the industry as trainer numbers have droped progressivly over the past 5 years. maybe there should be a young trainer of the year award to help push some intrest . i dunno

cheers

dont you breed and then sell your pups? would that not make you a blood sucking money maker rather than keeping hold of the whole litter and training them yourself? dont have a shot at the guy cause he wants to buy a dog, its people like you that make people not want to get into the industry with all of your self rightous know all attitude!

sold half of them and i talk to the owners and ask how there going all the time the other half were given to good homes. i was not in that for the money at all and its not a know all attitude at all im new to it all im a kid basicaly and i learn from others just like everyone else and just try to help other by relaying what i hear
my first greyhound was bought as a pet that i rescued and a guy wanted to breed with her to get a pup that how it all started so i dont know what you mean by people like me as i only just got into the industry 4 weeks ago my first race is on friday
