QUEEN Lauryn, coming off a track record public trial over 431m at Ipswich on Thursday morning, will head to Sandown next Thursday night for a trial. She ran 24.68 in the public trial which is easily inside Reliability’s track record. Trainer Tony Brett said the plans to give the Token Prince-Cheeky Sprite bitch a look at Sandown was for the major races coming up there later in the year. “All the big races including the Topgun and Sapphire Classic, are at Sandown this year and I’d like to give her a look at the track well in advance of that,” said Brett. He will then take her back to run her in a race on Thursday week, the night of the Group 1 Laurels final. “Steve (Hawkins, her owner) sponsors the Laurels and it will be great to have her racing on that night,” said Brett. Brett gave Queen Lauryn, who four runs back smashed the Wentworth Park 520m track record, a spell after being second to Miss Hot Gossip in two FFA runs at Albion Park recently. “She had a good week off and it has done her the world of good,” he said. “She will come back from Sandown to run in the heats of the Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park. “After those runs behind Miss Hot Gossip, I just wanted to take her away from Albion Park for a while.” Hawkins' commitments in coming weeks have forced him to miss a trip to the Darwin Cup. He recently bought Deep Prince, a winner at Albion Park last Thursday night for him, and gave the dog to Tom Tzouvelis to train. "The reason he bought the dog was so he could have a week in Darwin with his mates and see his dog race in the Cup series," said Tzouvelis. "He'd just about made all the bookings, and organised all his mates, but now can't go at all because of work commitments." |

Sell or not, Queen Lauryn for up to $300,000?
26 September, 2008
Media man Steve Hawkins will decide this weekend on whether to accept a $250,000 to $300,000 offer from China for his brilliant bitch Queen Lauryn. In what many would call no brainer, Hawkins emotional attachment to his family, star dog and trainer Tony Brett, is making the decision difficult. "I am weighing up the fact she is the family dog, she is worth a lot as a brood bitch,'' he said. "I wouldn't sell her to be trained by someone else in Australia. I wouldn't do that to Tony and his family. "If she is to be sold in full, she will be sold to China and we won't see her again in Australia. "I would look into selling a half share in Australia but retain the controlling interest. "That way, in many respects, I would be getting the best of both worlds. "At the end of the day I have to look after my family and my interests. "I have about $600,000 to $700,000 invested in the sport. "I have brood bitches and pups coming through, I have about 18 dogs. "At the end of the day, if there is no alternative to Nanderol it will destroy me." Hawkins was referring to the only drug approved by racing authorities to prevent a bitch coming on season, the same drug that has a detrimental effect on Queen Lauryn's performance. Brett withdrew administering the drug to Queen Lauryn and she came on season on the eve of the rich Paws Of Thunder last Friday and withdrew from the event. Being a 12 month bitch, Queen Lauryn will be in season again this time next year thus making her a non starter in some of the sports biggest events. "This weekend I will have to talk to my wife and Tony Brett and make a decision," Hawkins said. |

Compliments Greyhounds Queensland website
Queen Lauryn stays home 30 September 2008 By Chris Bassani Star bitch Queen Lauryn is staying in Australia. Owner Steve Hawkins has rejected a rich offer from China to sell after consulting his family and trainer Tony Brett at the weekend. "She is staying here and there are two geniune offers to buy a 49.9 per cent share in her from home," Hawkins said. "One is from Queensland and the other interstate." Hawkins agonised on whether to sell the seven time track records breaker after being offered well over $250,000. The new interested parties are talking "well over $100,000 for the half share," Hawkins said. Queen Lauryn, a winner of 15 of 22 starts and $50,000 in prizemoney, is one of four Queensland dogs to have been given first round invitations to the $100,000 Topgun run at the Meadows on October 23. "She is back in the kennel now and looking spot on," Hawkins said. Queen Lauryn who came on season a fortnight ago missed the rich Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park in consequence. Hawkins again has called for greyhound authorities to look into the Nanderol issue. It is the only approved drug to prevent a bitch coming on season but, according to connections, has a detrimental effect on Queen Lauryn's race performance. The other Queenslanders invited to the Topgun are Knocka Norris, Lucky Alive and Size Can Matter. Today Size Can Matter easily won a heat of the $250,000 Platinum Paws in New Zealand and now joins Lucky Alive in the semi finals to conducted on October 10. |
