Mongrel Muts and Their Mongrel Owners.
I have just read a private message from one of our Forum members (who will remain anonymous). The member's bitch was due to race for the first time in the immediate future but was today attacked by a German Shepherd who was running loose. I doubt if there is a greyhound person on this site who can not relate to this sort of incident from personal experience. Not that I ever had one injured (I was lucky) but we were certainly attacked on many occasions over several years and of course we all know of people whose dogs have been badly injured physically and also mentally. In very recent times it was Warren Harper's wonderful stayer, Miagi and going back several decades ago, I remember NSW St Leger winner, Size Seven, being attacked near the Wentworthville home of his trainer Bobby Thompson (located in the Northern Rivers region for many years). There are innumerable examples of this happening. What can I say, what can we do? Some of you will say "move to the country and don't leave your property except to go the trial tracks, race tracks, etc" but not all of us can do that. I am sure that we will all wish our fellow Forum member and his bitch well for the future.

When I trained dogs in town I got up real early and walked them to avoid other dogs, if I couldn't do that I would drive to the outskirts and walk them. Maybe find or befriend other trainers that have a straight track or big runs that wouldn't mind you using them a couple times a week and even slip them a few $ or a bag of kibble now and then so you don't wear out your welcome! If the mongrel is a serial offender call the pound! I have never used one, but some swear by walking machines. Don't worry I still got menaced many times by circling @!#$bag mongrels that came out of nowhere!
I hope the bitch recovers and all the best with her racing career! |
