Docking as its called is illegal in Australia unless a vet believes its necessary.
You would have to talk to your vet to see if you can actually perform the proceedure.

You can read more on it here

how exactly is he hurting himself? is he hurting his tail itself or straining the muscles around it? and how old is he, hopefully if only young he will figure it out soon enough.
I cant see docking being very advantageous though.

Need more info please ?
1. Is the dog in a kennel ?
2. Is the tail bleeding most days ?

Suzy was a tail basher in her kennel. Went in the kennel one day blood everywhere, on the floor in the kennel, on the ceiling thought there was a mass murder going on.

Anyway took her to a well known greyhound vet. He suggested one of those old plastic granny curlers, taped the curl to the end of the tail. and that worked.

Then in the kennel I attached two pieces of timber one in the centre one at the bottom and attached hessian. Gave you this sort of look I( )I, so the greyhounds tail is not whacking against a mesh wall.

Personally I would try everything to save the tail, and leave docking as a last option.

thanks for the replies...
dog is kennelled and the tail was bleeding nearly every day. He's 2 1/2 and funnily never did it in his previous kennel. He's tried bandages but it was to no avail.

The tail was docked 2 weeks ago and he trialled yesterday and although he went back about 3 lengths he had done nothing for two weeks so it wasn't a surprise.

I'll keep u all posted! thanks again
