Default Spud back from kilcoyne

Got spud the pup back from kilcoyne yesterday a bit down in weight but was told to expect that robert the owner gave me some very stern advice on what to do next for which i am very gratefull and he stressed the point on not to take the the pup to goulburn or bulli tracks are too big and he said it will mentaly ruin him but to hand slip twice at thirlmere then out of boxes then give him a month off bring him back to dapto and repeat what i did at thirlmere plus some starting short and work up which i will do to the letter but i need to know if you can put pups up straight slipping tracks no lure for fitness runs did not ask kilcoyne as i had left and forgot so can any one advise if free running up straight tracks will do any harm regards billy bones.

You can slip the pup up the straight track by having someone at the top to call/whistle him up. It's not good for any dog to be allowed to just run up and down the straight as this will jar up their legs and give them some bad habits.
Free galloping in a 100m yard is different, it's fine to do that (as long as it has deep soft sand at both ends)

I never use a lure when slipping dogs up the straight as they will work hard especially in pairs when you call them up (with a fluffy toy/squeeker/treat so you can easily catch them at the top of the straight).

Good luck with Spud :-)

thanks for that advice because i would have just let him go on his own that will not happen now. i tell you you cant substitute for knowlage what i would have done to that what you have said to do seems so minor but the outcome could have been very different the same as robert at kilcoyne my first thought was to take spud to goulburn for his next part of education again that could have been disastrous. again i truly thank every one on this site and will continue to ask the smallest questions and maybe one day i will be able to answer some as well again thanks. billy bones

Sorry Billy but I'm not sure about the owner telling you what you should or shouldn't be doing with the dog, maybe he should train it himself !!! In Vic mate you must be a owner/trainer for 12 months before you train for other people, that way you learn the basics on your own dog. Things will not work out to well if he is looking over your shoulder telling you what to do all the time!!!
First and most definatley foremost you should worm it out, have checked by a greyhound checker or vet, get some weight back on and build up some fitness before you look at public trialling. Breaking in is a very stressful time for young dogs and a fair percentage come home with worms, fleas, and soreness, don't be too eager to trial it mate make sure all is well with the dog first!!!

they have changed the rules, no longer do you need to be an owner trainer for 12months before you can train for outside clients

i got a full public license straight off the bat, only thing may have been as i held at attendants license for awhile before hand
