George Hanlon, a three-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer, has died.
Regarded as one of Australia’s finest trainers, especially of stayers, Hanlon prepared 37 Group I winners in a career spanning 65 years. He was 92.
His Melbourne Cup winners were Piping Lane (1972), Arwon (1978) and Black Knight (1984).
He won the 2000 Caulfield Cup with Diatribe.
Hanlon also won a Cox Plate, an Australian Cup, an AJC Derby and a Doncaster as well as four Adelaide Cups.
Hanlon was inducted into the Australian racing Hall of Fame in 2002.
Besides his Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winners, other famous horses to race under his name included Family Of Man, Lawman, Taras Bulba, Our Pompeii and Sydney Cup winner Mr Prudent.
