Hi billybones, did you put the two together in one injection? It depends on how much iron was used (b12 not so much of a worry but iron is a danger if overused or injected into the wrong spot) yes can cause damage if not used carefully according to strict directions on the bottle.
(Toxic levels of iron can cause damage to the stomach and intestinal lining, also cause severe liver damage and heart damage.)

Dogs are more easily affected by iron overdoses than people because they do not have a way to excrete excessive iron from their bodies.

Sorry for the scare, Billybones lol if the dog has picked up then perhaps it was just a slight reaction to the iron, or could have been something else.

But yes definitely get a vet check and blood test to make sure his bloodwork etc is normal.

Cheers

We all start somewhere Billy, from my experience it is always best to let a good greyhound vet or well respected checker do the needling especially when you don't really know what sort of effect the needle will have on a dog. Over time alot of "trainers" will tell you to give the dog this or that but you have to feel comfortable yourself with it as after all your the one responsible for its wellbeing. My advice would be to find a vet or checker that you can have a good repor with and bounce the questions off them 9/10 they are more than willing to help out I have found! Good luck mate, I hope he wins for you real soon!!!

I agree with Gippy.

Iron injections should only be used on vet's advice after a blood test, as you don't know whether a dog needs it or not, and if you give it to a dog that doesn't need it, it can make the dog very sick.
So...... Iron injections should only be used AFTER a blood test has shown it is needed.

If you need to pick up a dog, you can give Folic a few days before a race (I find Foliphos the best but only to be used sparingly, not all the time otherwise it will just stop working for the dog.) and B12 about 4-6 hours before a race.

However all injections should really only be done by a confident experienced person as damage can be easily done by a novice.

cheers

Just keep asking questions Billy and we will endevour to help you.
When I started 18 months ago, I came on these forums just like you and asked questions. The people on here helped me get winners and I have learnt from them the do's and don'ts. From there I have listened to many trainers and took bits and pieces from what they have told me on training greyhounds. They are good people here and You can't go wrong with their advise. I hope the same will happen to you and your dogs.
