Vintage display in Sale Cup Friday 26th December, 2008 The versatile Vintage Octane justified his hot favourtism when he scored a sensational win in the Group 2 Gold 1242 Sale Cup tonight. Despite leading all the way and clocking a stunning time of 37.34sec over the 650 metres trip, the Darren McDonald-trained youngster defeated the gallant Burrawonga Brett (James Birthisel) by one and a quarter lengths. The Glenn Rounds-trained Purple Range finished third, a further two and a quarter lengths adrift. The Sale Cup is Victoria's richest middle distance event, boasting prize money of $30,000 (1st), $8,000 (2nd) and $4,000 (3rd). Vintage Octane has now had 21 starts for 13 wins and 3 seconds and it will be interesting to see if McDonald tries to transform his versatile star into a stayer. Whether he is nominated for next month's Group 2 Maidment Memorial (715 metres) series at Sandown Park or not could tell the tale. |
