AUTHORITY PROVIDES “green Light” For Greyhounds To Catch Lure After A Trial

PRESS RELEASE

AUTHORITY PROVIDES “GREEN LIGHT” FOR GREYHOUNDS TO CATCH LURE AFTER A TRIAL

The Authority has approved a 3 month Trial, effective immediately, for Trials of four Greyhounds to “catch the lure” at the completion of the Trial.

The Trials are to be conducted in the presence of a Veterinarian who will examine the Greyhounds at the completion of the Trial to ensure there are no Animal Welfare issues.

To date, Dapto and Bathurst Greyhound Clubs have indicated a desire to undertake these Trials.

At the completion of the 3 months Trial period, the Authority will obtain feedback from Race Officials, Veterinarians, Trainers and Handlers and carefully consider its ongoing position in the matter.

What would be the benefit of this?

Satisfaction for the greyhounds? :)

There is more important things to worry about in NSW greyhound racing than this at the moment.

they do it in NZ at the moment, its supposed to keep the dogs keener for longer and not go sour during they're career

i believe one of the major reasons is to try and stop the injury's which occur when going in to the catching pen etc.

Anyone know when they are going to introduce it?

Dougie 05-12-2008 10:53 AM

I was told last night that Bathurst have been trialling it before the first race.

They have also had trials of the lure @ Warragul. Rumor has it GRV won't go ahead with it in races.

Bad Idea in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have spoken to mates who have recently been in NZ, a 38kg dog came 6th in a race event, knew he was getting lure at end so he pounded into the other 5 dogs ahead causing severe shoulder damage to them, and he drived onto the lure falling onto another dog causing it to have a leg injury as well as himself hurting himself slamming into the lure at a fast pace coming from lengths behind.

Safer? Not my idea of safe!!!, a drag lure like that at appin may be of assistance but injuries happen, cant be prevented, things are fine as it is, get over it and continue on - our dogs are used to things are is it!

As Doug said there are a lot more important things to worry about then something like this that is very debatable - Many like it,.... Many dont..... but we have dealt with the current system for a very very long time, change can be good but why bother. Its time, money and at this stage there isnt even a definate answer as to whether it will work and have happy people in the game.

I for one obviously do not like it, but if it works then good stuff.... at least they are giving it a trial run too see what others have to say about it.
