Broken in Dogs ??

hi guys,
please forgive my lack of knowledge about greyhound racing,

my questions are ,

i have been thinking of getting a dog that has already raced ,

is it possible to look after and exersize a dog and race it without a trainer ? could i do it myself ?

i was thinking of just racing in the country , im not looking for a champion just for a dog to learn the ropes with, then keep it later on as a pet ,

as cheap as possible ?

what is involved once i have a dog ? do i need to get a trainer licence ?

can the dog go straight in races or would need to do a pre race trial ?

i am a pensioner , but not a blugger as i do have a part time job, for the last 8 years with coles supermarket , but i am not very rich , but i do look after my animals so the dog would be well looked after ,

i have always wanted to have a race dog ,

please guys any help with info would be real great,

sorry again for my lack of knowlege and my long winded post,

regards jason

My advice Jason is to find a trainer close by, go and volunteer your time to them for a while and see what is involved in training a race dog! It is actually a bit expensive to train dogs unless they are winning. You do need a license, a warm clean kennel, vet bills, leads, muzzles, good qaulity tucker, vitamins etc, etc.
In saying this its also a great thrill to train a dog and a great sport to be involved in!! But don't go into it blind as there is a lot more to it than meets the eye!!
ps You can get a giveaway dog at the track in a heartbeat, your best bet would be to put a notice in the office, just make sure its no a broken down hack!!
Good Luck!!

hi gippy,
thanks for the reply, it does sound like it is a fair bit of work involved with them,
i am only thinking of 1 dog, it is something i dont want to rush into,

you say to put a notice in the office , sorry what is the office ?

i have thought about helping a trainer like you said ,
i am also looking at moving to bendigo next year , i thought that it would be a good place to find someone to learn from,
as here there are no greyhounds at all ,

thanks for the help so far,

regards jason

Every track has a office where you go to book trials, pick-up prizemoney, whinge, perve on the hot chick that works there etc. You could ask if they would let you put notice up on the notice board wanting a giveaway dog.

oh okay thanks ,

so there are always heaps of dogs to give away ?

would a free dog be any good at all ?

what sort of broken in dog would i get for up to $500

You really need to get a young dog who is most probably seen as not being up to it and hope that it improves a bit with time and patience!! How you forsee this is the problem!! Someone always knows someone else who is looking to give a dog away but be patient and ask alot of questions, you don't want to end up with a ill mannered dog that will sour your first experience with them. You need one with a good temperament who has the chance of improving. $500 will only buy you a $500 giveaway your better to put the $$ towards gear and tucker for your dog. Just don't expect to win races with a giveaway and then if you do its a bonus!! I gave one away recently in ended up in W.A and has now won 2 and ran a few places from 20 odd starts!!

thanks so much for the replys,

just a couple of last questions ,

if a dog keeps loseing races do they only allow it to lose so many races then stop it from racing ?

can a dog go straight into a race or does it need to be trailed ,?

and what does it cost to put a dog into a race,?

and what gear would i need for 1 race dog ?

oh and you can get ill manned greyhounds ? i thought they were all very freindly ?

sorry for all the questions

Asking questions Jason is the only way to learn!! However mate your lack of knowledge on racing greyhounds can only really be solved with some hands on experience!! There is a LOT to it, not just walking your dog twice a day and
rocking up to the races. I was lucky when I first got into it as I had a few good mentors who guided me along the way. In my opinion you cannot learn to train a dog on the net, its all about gaining some experience!!
