Narrowly Missed Fortune
Extract from the following source, The Greyhound Annual 1970. "Warren Harper, his trainer, narrowly missed a fortune when his other dog, Holding, was beaten in a photo finish in the first leg of the Daily Double. Harper had invested $100 on the Daily Double combination of Holding and Beau Brin. Astute estimates at the time put Holding's narrow defeat as costing Harper $50,000". Let me assure you that $50,000 was a lot of money at that time. Warren Harper is the trainer of former star NSW stayer Miagi. Warren and before him, his dad, Les, trained a lot of dogs and a lot of good dogs, so he has come to know all about the "ups" and "downs" of dog racing, the "highs" and the "lows". The other dog Beau Brin did win the NSW Derby Final that night, landing good bets at odds of as much as 40/1 (e.g. $4000 to $100) so it was probably not all bad.
