THE Paris leg of the Beijing Olympics torch relay began today at the foot of the Eiffel Tower amid tight security and protests by pro-Tibet activists.

The torch was to be carried in relay by 80 runners on a 28km route to a stadium in the south of the capital, protected by a cordon of motorcycle police, jogging firemen, police on roller blades and dozens of riot police vehicles.
Hundreds of pro-Tibet activists were protesting on a square opposite the Eiffel Tower against China's crackdown in Tibet.
