Varvatos Throws Down Challenge To Chinatown Lad
CHINATOWN LAD’S reputation as Australia’s premier stayer remains intact but the brilliant Tasmanian had his colours lowered for the first time in four starts at Wentworth Park in the second of two Sydney Cup heats at the famous Ultimo track tonight.
Earlier, Chinatown Lad’s arch rival Varvatos produced yet another tradesman-like performance to snare the opening Cup heat in 42.47.
After being only fifth in the middle stages, Varvatos made his move wide on the track with 250m to run and took control as the first headed home and came away to score by 3 1/4 lengths lengths in a smart 42.47.
Fallen Zorro had her chance and was beaten on merit into second place while outsider Double Trouble was another length away in third place.
By means of finishing fourth, Sassy Sprite secured a place in next Saturday’s Group 2 final but will need to improve sharply to feature.
The well supported Lilley Criminal, a recent addition to the in-form Anthony Azzopardi kennel, finished a disappointing last.
A check at the first turn cost Chinatown Lad is usual tactical forward position in and, despite looking capable of still winning with 200m to run, the brindle dog failed to catch a determined Gunnadoo Magic in 42.71 in heat two.
Octane Al made ground from the back to finish 1 1/4 lengths away in third place while 16/1 shot Others Quoted was fourth while the enigmatic Princess Bale finished last.
Though beaten Chinatown Lad is likely to start a warm favourite in the Sydney Cup Final and a win will further enhance his prospect of securing the Australian Greyhound of the Year title.
